Using market-based approaches, we emphasize environmental sustainability and inclusive development. We lower the barriers to economic and social development and promote local ownership. SNV provides tailor-made and sustainable interventions that are effective at raising incomes, providing meaningful employment opportunities, and improving access to and coverage of basic services. Our interventions acknowledge the critical importance of improved climate change resilience and mitigation strategies to achieve sustainable change. Our work is aligned with the country’s national development priorities and strategies. We work in close collaboration with the government, civil society, and private sector. Our multi-national team of experts works from our country office in Kathmandu and various project offices in various parts of the country.
Project Background
Access to modern energy is a prerequisite for social and economic development, and to achieving many of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Through SNV’s project and programmes, we address the negative social, economic, environmental, gender, and health implications of traditional cooking in rural Nepal. The use of dirty cooking fuel and associated smoke exposure contributes to serious health problems, leading to the 22,000 plus premature deaths in in Nepal per year.
SNV promotes through market-based approaches, the dissemination of electric cooking appliance, as well as the accelerates the transition from firewood to clean cooking fuels. SNV enhances awareness, activates demand, and builds capacity of local institutions aligned with Nepal’s Nationally Determined Contributions, basic rights to the cleaner environment, Energy Access Plan and various national and internation commitments.
Role of the Energy Advisor
The Energy Advisor will be responsible for Market Development of Electric Cooking in Nepal project through clean cooking solutions. The Advisor will contribute to managing the planning and implementation of the projects, within scope, budget, timeline, and acceptable quality levels along the commitments specified in the contracts signed with the donor(s) and other relevant stakeholders. The Advisor works in compliance to SNV standards, SNV`s approach to project implementation, to achieve high quality and results and deliverables of the project.
Job Description
The Advisor builds and maintains effective relationships within the team and external partners by ensuring a prominent level of SNV visibility and branding. Signals and acts on potential for positioning, innovation, upscaling, and potential follow up on projects. Recognizes threats in time and analyses potential solutions while making sure relevant colleagues are informed. Initiates/ coordinates the review process and evaluation of advisory services to collect lessons learned, proposes corrective measures, and ensures identification of follow up assignments. Participates in knowledge development/expertise groups and in internal and external networks. Steers (functionally) colleagues and coaches associated partners/ external stakeholders on quality within the context of assignments.
The advisor acts as technical expert for designing the contextual plan for promotion of e-cooking for the selected communities from programme provinces and provide support to the local private sectors for creating an enabling environment for them to operate in, to run business and to make investments feasible. On the demand side, the advisor develops pragmatic BCC interventions for awareness raising and demand creation on electric cooking adoption. The advisor contributes to internal and external knowledge development, ensures lessons learned are shared and applied in daily practice, and identifies and proposes technical process improvements to the project-team. The advisor may be appointed as (national) focal point of an expertise network. This position needs leadership quality and experience of working together with the local partner organisation.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in specialised/ relevant technical field and minimum 4 years of experience in development work and project implementation in relevant topics such as energy, environment, or climate change related projects.
- Has knowledge about GEDSI (Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion) aspects relevant to energy sector.
- Demonstrates analytical skills and ability to detect problems, recognise vital information and link various data to trace causes of issues and look for relevant details.
- Encourages and guides employees to make their performance more effective and to enhance their self-perception and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to take direct action to attain or exceed objectives.
- Sets high quality standards and strives for continuous improvement and quality assurance.

Contract Duration: 1 year with possibilities of an extension.
