Mission and objectives

UN-Habitat is the United Nations programme working towards a better urban future with a mission to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. The mandate of UN-Habitat derives from the shared vision of New Urban Agenda, underlines the linkages between good urbanization and job creation, livelihood opportunities, and improved quality of life. With the fast urbanization and narrowing of urban-rural linkages UN-Habitat works in wider fields of areas. The major focus areas of UN-Habitat are:

  • Urban legislation, land, and governance,
  • Urban planning and design,
  • Urban economy,
  • Urban basic services,
  • Housing and slum upgrading,
  • Risk reduction and rehabilitation, and
  • Research and capacity development.

Under land, housing and shelter, UN-Habitat hosts the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN) an alliance of international partners dedicated to developing, disseminating and implementing pro-poor. gender-responsive land tools that contribute to land reform, and good land governance.

Context

UN-Habitat in Nepal with the GLTN support has been working with the government and other stakeholders in promoting the national land policy and secured tenure of land to the landless and informal settlers. As a follow-up, with the funding of Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) of the Republic of Korea a project “A safety net of innovative land tenure solutions for near-landless sharecroppers and for a greener rural Nepal” is under implementation from 2023 to 2027. The project is implemented in collaboration with Korea Land and Geospatial informatrix Corporation (LX) and Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI).
The objective of the project is to reduce landlessness and scaling up climate-smart land use and farming practices to improve livelihoods of indigenous communities in 4 municipalities in Dang district of Nepal”.
The three Outcome areas are:
Outcome 1: Improved tenure security of near-landless indigenous people including women and youth.
Outcome 2: Near-landless indigenous people including women and youth have increased access to sustainable livelihoods and green economic activities.
Outcome 3: The municipalities plan and promote sustainable, climate smart and inclusive land use.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the Project Coordinator and the overall supervision of the UN Habitat Programme Manager, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Assist in the conducting survey and participatory enumeration of landless, informal tenants and sharecroppers.
  2. Assist in the planning process, for land use and climate smart agriculture.
  3. Assist in the identifying regreening activities and climate smart agriculture and livelihood practices.
  4. Assist in the documentation of the project learnings and case studies as best practices for wider dissemination.
  5. Assist in the preparation of the knowledge products and social media outreach posts on project activities and best practices.
  6. Support translation of necessary materials into Korean and support in communication with Korean with the donors (MAFRA, Embassy of Korean, KOICA) and Korean partners (LX, KREI)

ELIGIBILITY

  • As this assignment is funded by KOICA, specific eligibility criteria apply.
  • Candidates must be Korean nationals between 18 and 29 years of age at the time of application (the age limit shown above does not apply).
  • You must be enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree or have recently graduated (no longer than 12 months ago at the time of application).
  • Candidates who already served on a UN Volunteer assignment funded by KOICA are not eligible.

  • If you are currently enrolled in a university and have not yet obtained a university degree, indicate in the section ‘Academic qualifications’ under ‘diploma/degree obtained’ that you are still studying and towards which degree. In the ‘to’ field, enter the current date, as the system does not allow you to enter a future date. Instead of the degree certificate, upload any evidence of your enrollment, for example a transcript.
  • You may apply to a maximum of three assignments and indicate the order of preference in the ‘Additional remarks’ field when filling in the application form.
  • If you are above the age of 26, a notification will be displayed that you are not eligible to apply. You may ignore this and proceed with submitting your application.

SELECTION

  • Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. The selection will be done by the UN Host Entity at the level of the country of assignment. Interviews will be conducted by the UN Host Entity in June.
  • Selected candidates will be invited to attend a mandatory online preparation training on 19 and 21 August.

Other information
Living conditions and remarks

The volunteer will be based in Kathmandu with field mission if required. In Kathmandu, comfortable inexpensive flats (furnished and unfurnished) are available. Imported and local food and clothing are abundantly available. Water is in somewhat short supply and not safe to drink without treatment. Public transport is easily available and generally reliable. Kathmandu has a temperate climate with coldest temperature reaching just above zero at the night during the winter and mild but humid during the monsoon period, mid-June to end September. As this is an international UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. International UN Volunteers are part of the malicious insurance plan.
