Mission and objectives

UNICEF promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child, in everything we do. Together with our partners, we work in 190 countries and territories to translate that commitment into practical action, focusing special effort on reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all children, everywhere.

In all of its work, UNICEF takes a life-cycle based approach, recognizing the particular importance of early childhood development and adolescence. UNICEF programmes focus on the most disadvantaged children, including those living in fragile contexts, those with disabilities, those who are affected by rapid urbanization and those affected by environmental degradation.

We help children and families affected by HIV/AIDS to live their lives with dignity.

Context

Under UNICEF’s mandate to improve the well-being of all children everywhere, communication plays a pivotal role, serving as a powerful tool to raise awareness and mobilize support for our mission. In this regard, creation of high-quality, compelling multimedia content, is crucial in enabling us to highlight the situation of children and young people, capture UNICEF’s work to improve their lives, and catalyse positive action and change.

UNICEF Nepal’s donor partners provide the organization with crucial support to achieve impact for children in Nepal. The Communication, Advocacy and Partnerships Section ensures the contributions of these partners are recognized through the development of high-quality communication and visibility content, including stories, photos, videos, infographics, reports and branding of various documents and materials.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the Communication Officer, the National UNV Specialist:

Implement donor partner communication and visibility plans:

• Support the development of donor branding guidelines to ensure consistent usage and style across all documents, materials and spaces.
• Collect human-interest stories on UNICEF’s three office priorities and from UNICEF’s four priority provinces.
• Organise the production of high-quality content (photo/video) for use on social media, during events, and in reports.
• Organise film and photo workshops to be organised with active involvement of and engagement with children and youth.
• Support with donor visits.
• Prepare text and images for UNICEF Nepal’s social media channels.
•  Prepare infographics on key results achieved.

Additional tasks:

•  Support the organization of capacity-building sessions for project staff – including UNICEF’s Field Offices and local partners – and co-creation sessions that will focus on communication skills, including photography, videography, and storytelling.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

•  Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
•  Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
• Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
• Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
•  Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
• Development of UNICEF and donor partner branding guidelines.
• Development of high-quality content (photo/video) packages.
• Development of high-quality human-interest stories, including photos.
• Organization of film workshop with children/young people resulting in a short documentary film.
•  Organization of photo workshop with children/young people resulting in a photo exhibition.
•  Organization of successful donor visits
•  Creation of social media messages.
• Creation and design of infographics/reports highlighting key results achieved.
• Support with organizing events and campaigns.

Required education level

Bachelor degree or equivalent in arts, communications, media studies, public relations, development studies, social work, science or a related field.

Living conditions and remarks

The contract lasts for the period indicated above with possibility of extensions subject to availability of funding, operational necessity and satisfactory performance. However, there is no expectation of renewal of the assignment. Travel to duty station (if applicable) and a Settling-In-Grant will be provided in the event the duty station is not within commuting distance from the place of recruitment. The applicable Volunteer Living Allowance is provided monthly to cover housing, utilities and normal cost of living expenses. Life, health and permanent disability insurance are included (health insurance for up to 3 dependents), as well as final repatriation (if applicable) and resettlement allowance for satisfactory service.
Furthermore, in non-family duty stations that belong to hardship categories D or E, as classified by the ICSC, a Well-Being Differential (WBD) will be provided monthly.
