One Health Advisor (Nepal)
Job Summary
The One Health Advisor will support the implementation of activities to strengthen implementation of the One Health approach to enhance Global Health Security (GHS) in Nepal with the general objective to prevent, detect, rapidly and effectively respond to public health threats of international concern including naturally occurring outbreaks and intentional or accidental releases of dangerous pathogens. The incumbent will be responsible for activities related to strengthening the adoption and implementation of the One Health approach and drive strategies to prevent, limit, and contain zoonotic disease spread.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the expansion of the One Health approach to engage relevant sectors and disciplines including human health, animal health, wildlife, environment, public, academia, research, and private sectors at national and subnational levels.
- Lead activities to strengthen national capacities to efficiently operationalize One Health including but not limited to:
- Support the identification of the One Health core competencies required for Veterinary Services and other relevant sectors at national and sub-national levels;
- Design/Develop/Deliver training curricula based on the required core competencies for relevant levels;
- Prepare, organize, participate in, and provide technical support as the trainer for the One Health trainings/workshops;
- Support to link human and animal health surveillance using the One Health approach.
- Lead activities to improve national capacity to apply an extended One Health approach to prevent and manage spillovers and/or EID.
- Contribute to developing/reviewing One Health strategies, action plans and frameworks.
- Build capacity of FHI 360 staff and partners in One Health and zoonotic diseases and how to implement strategies to detect, respond to, and prevent spillover.
- Support Technical Director to provide technical assistance to strengthen functions and roles of national committees or technical working groups such as One Health Steering Committee, One Health Technical Coordination Committee or similar governance structures.
- Provide support to conduct and participate in national One Health committees and technical working groups.
- Prepare, organize, participate in, and provide technical support, as facilitator, trainer and/or evaluator, at the national and sub national One Health events such as technical meetings, workshops, and simulation exercises in liaison with the key stakeholders.
- Lead engagement with One Health stakeholders including government entities (health, animal and environment sectors), private sectors, professional organizations and multilateral agencies such as WHO, UNICEF, FAO, and WFP.
- Coordinate and collaborate with other organizations involved in One Health activities in Nepal.
- Ensure programmatic and technical quality of the implemented activities.
- Works closely with the Technical Director to define and adjust annual work plans as well as to implement technical activities.
Minimum Requirements:
- Master’s degree in medicine or veterinary science and animal health with a post-graduate degree in relevant field or PhD in public health, life sciences, or a related field with a focus on infectious disease detection, surveillance and diagnostics.
- At least 8 years of experience in public health programs and/or related area.
- Technical competency in infectious disease(s) and surveillance systems.
- Demonstrated minimum of 6 years-experience in diagnostics/surveillance/ Epidemiology/AMR/One Health implementation.
- Ability to travel domestically at least 25%.
