One Health Concept:
HDCS is implementing an innovative project in Rukum West based upon the notion of ‘One Health’, highlighting the links between human, animal and environmental health. We will be working with local community groups, focusing on two main streams of activities:
1) Awareness raising: educating community groups in health and hygiene related subjects including WASH. At the same time there will be teaching on animal health and how the two intersect. The environmental health part will focus on household waste management and the impacts on the other two areas. The project will also reach local schools with this topic.
2) Practical implementation: we will establish model farms, which will demonstrate the benefits of implementing safe One Health practices. We will show the benefits of eco-friendly farming, crop diversification, and other practices such as segregating animals from humans and reducing the use of antibiotics. A ‘One Health Centre’ will be established as a training and research base where local people will come to learn more about improved farming techniques.
