PHASE Nepal is a non-governmental, organization established in 2006 with a vision to build a self-empowered and self-sustained society where all kinds of discrimination are absent. PHASE Nepal’s health, education, livelihoods, research and strengthening the concept of independent living projects are currently running across various rural communities in Nepal. PHASE Nepal has been implementing a component of the Accountability and Responsiveness in Informal Settlements for Equity (ARISE) project with the funding of Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM). The title of the Nepal based research is “Assessing the status of living conditions and accountability status of people living in informal settlements in Nepal: A mixed method implementation study”.
The aim of this study is to assess the living condition, mental health status and access to services of people living in informal settlements in Kathmandu and Pokhara, Nepal, strengthen relationships between relevant stakeholders, and improve accountability towards them. PHASE Nepal is currently looking for suitable candidates for the following position:
Research interns
Duration: 3 to 6 months depending upon the benefit envisioned to the interns.
The duration of the internship will be tailored to individual intern’s need, their time available and research requirements. For example, some of the interns might want to do a straight certain days, weeks, months, or certain days every week, month for a longer period.

Location: PHASE Nepal central office in Bhaktapur (New Thimi) and research sites in Kathmandu and Pokhara
Benefits and allowances: Please note, this is a non-salaried internship opportunity. You will not be treated as the staff of PHASE Nepal and neither get any salary and benefits. However, we will cover your cost of public transport and will provide you lunch for the days you come to the office and for the days you are helping in the field work.
Project description and scope of internship:
PHASE Nepal is implementing a mixed-method implementation study to assess the living condition, mental health status and access to services of people living in informal settlements in Kathmandu and Pokhara valley of Nepal. The study aims to strengthen relationships between relevant stakeholders and improve accountability towards them. The study is ongoing and involved collecting data through surveys, interviews, and a few participatory methods (social mapping, transect walk and photo voice). Currently we are at the stage of some intervention, data analysis, report writing and output preparation.

- You will be named as an author if you lead yourself or named as coauthor on the peer-reviewed academic papers others write based on your contribution in the research process.
- You will have an opportunity to work with experienced researchers.
- You will learn how to use basics of research software such as Kobo toolbox, NVivo, SPSS, Endnote etc.
- You will learn to develop your CV, application letters for jobs and universities if you are interested.
- Upon successful completion of your internship, you will get an experience letter explaining your involvement in different components of research and you can also put one of the mentors or PHASE Nepal staff as your reference for future careers.
During this internship, the intern will assist in the following areas:
- Assist in the transcription and translation of data.
- Contribute to data analysis, report-writing and articles writing for peer review journals for publication.
- Work collaboratively with other team members to achieve project objectives.
- Perform any other duties as required by the project.
Qualifications and experience:
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Sociology, Anthropology, or any other relevant field.
- People with Masters’ Degree who want to build their research experience are encouraged to apply.
- Interested in applied research, particularly in publishing a manuscript on the study findings.
- Experience in conducting field surveys, in-depth interviews and using participatory methods will be beneficial.
- Good oral and written communication skills in English and Nepali.
- Good computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office.
