PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
A seismic event with magnitude of 6.4 struck Barekot Rural Municipality of Jajarkot District in the Karnali province, at 11:45 pm on November 3, 2023. The earthquake was destructive, resulting in significant loss of life and property in Jajarkot and Rukum districts, with tremors felt as far as the capital city Kathmandu. Numerous aftershocks followed the initial quake, and the casualty count stands at 154. This catastrophic event impacted the lives and livelihoods of the people in one of Nepal’s most impoverished regions.
Since the onset of this earthquake Mercy Corps Nepal is engaged in information management support and humanitarian market assessment. We have responded to this disaster by reaching out to the 1150 most needed households through the transitional shelter and winterization with support from Start fund.
Mercy Corps is currently implementing a recovery project which aims to support Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) recovery in earthquake-affected communities in selected palikas of Jajarkot and West Rukum districts. The recovery project will work in complementarity with other agencies to provide comprehensive support to increase access to WASH services through Cash and Voucher Assistance (CVA). The project will reach the most vulnerable 100 households with: 1) Toilet construction, 2) Restoration of water systems through cash-for-work schemes, 3) Multipurpose cash assistance, 4) Nutrition top-up, and 5) Equitable shelter support.
