Position: Database Officer

Job Description

Nyaya Health Nepal is looking for a Database Officer to strengthen our data management systems, support evidence-based decision making, and enhance our organizational learning culture. The Database Engineer will join a team of IT professionals working to customize, develop and inmplement Electronic Health Record System at rural low resource settings. Applications are accepted on an immediate, rolling basis.

The Opportunity: Are you the right fit?

We are seeking a Database Officer who will oversee the development, maintenance, and optimization of NHN’s data systems. The role requires strong technical skill, attention to detail, and the ability to work in environments that require creativity and efficient problem-solving with limited resources.

Job Specification

Management Structure

Reports To: Senior Impact Manager

Direct Reports: None (may supervise interns/assistants as needed)

Location: Based on Kathmandu but may need to travel to implementation sites

Must-Have Qualities:

  • Strong alignment with NHN culture, ethics, and patient-centered values
  • Solid technical skills in SQL, EHR, DHIS2, and data system development
  • Good time and task management with ability to handle multiple workflows
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Clear communication in English and Nepali
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Experience in data quality, dashboards, and documentation is an advantage

Big 3 Responsibilities:

1. Database Development, Migration, and Optimization for the Integrated EHR Platform

  •  Perform migration and optimization of existing databases.
  •  Normalize and cluster current databases to improve performance.
  •  Design and develop database architectures for various systems.
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure products are delivered on time and according to requirements, from planning through implementation.
  • Enhance system integrations across platforms such as OpenMRS, OpenELIS, Odoo, DCM4Che and DHIS2.
  •  Provide regular updates to the Team Lead on progress and challenges.
  •  Write complex and diverse queries based on organizational requirements.

2. Agile Development Responsibilities

  •  Estimate the effort required to implement user stories.
  •  Contribute to achieving sprint goals through development tasks.
  •  Implement relevant test cases.
  • Conduct unit tests and initial acceptance testing.
  • Identify blockers and report them to the Scrum Master.
  • Work in a self-organized manner within the team.
  •  Participate in daily Scrum meetings.

3. Quality Delivery and Ownership of the Integrated EHR Product

  • Deliver work only after thorough testing.
  •  Prepare technical documentation for all completed tasks.
  •  Provide technical insights when needed, clearly explaining technical concepts to the Team Lead.
  •  Coordinate and communicate with the global Bahmni coalition if required.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate in all project phases, including requirement gathering, design, and development.
  • Design, write, and maintain efficient, reliable database and queries.
  • Support EHR development and implementation, including training staff and clinicians in the effective use of NepalEHR.
  •  Provide feedback to EMR/EHR developers to support product improvement.
  • Assist the team with generating reports from the database.
  •  Optimize existing databases to improve overall system performance.
  • Manage database query components for DHIS integration.

Note: The above responsibilities are not exhaustive. The Database position may be assigned additional duties as directed by the line manager.
